Campaign: “Fury of the Forgotten”
Episode 4: Unbridled Nightmares
April 26, 2025
After finishing his drink, Caelan Thorne rose from the table, strapped his shield across his back, and stepped into the chill air of Blackmere’s streets.
Night had settled deep, the city's torches flickering against a rising mist. He stopped first at the stables, where he had left Nesse, his faithful and trusted steed.
A stable boy hurried to meet him, his face pale with worry. Someone has stolen your horse, sir,
he said.
My horse?
Caelan narrowed his eyes. Nyra Duskmoor didn’t strike him as a thief. This was something else.
We’re tracking down the thief. We’ll get your horse back, I promise,
the boy added, though his voice lacked conviction.
It was late. Maybe by morning the boy would have better news. But Caelan knew the road ahead would not wait for good tidings. He needed a horse—or he needed to adapt.
Accepting the grim news with a curt nod, he set off on foot toward the west gate, where he found Nyra waiting patiently behind the flickering lanterns.
What’s wrong?
she asked, sensing his frustration before he spoke.
Caelan noticed that Nyra, too, was without a horse. Someone took my horse,
he said simply.
She gave a brief, humorless smile before her expression hardened. They stole mine, too. A few days ago, when I first arrived,
she said.
Nyra was prepared to travel on foot. A sturdy pack rested against her side, brimming with provisions. She had planned for hardship.
Someone doesn’t want us leaving the city,
Caelan muttered. There was no mistaking the pattern now. Two missing horses. Two strangers. One purpose.
The mage tightened her pack and grinned slightly. A big paladin like you—afraid of a little walking?
Caelan wasn’t worried about walking. It was the mystery gnawing at him—the idea that unseen hands were already trying to hinder their journey. Finding the missing horses could lead to more clues.
